Federation Square Photo: Federation Square

Federation square is one of the favorite meeting places of the inhabitants of Melbourne, and a venue for cultural and social events in the heart of the city. This is a real full block bounded by the Yarra river on one side and the streets of Flinders street and Swanson street and Russell street with three other area of approximately 40 thousand square meters around the square are a variety of galleries, cinemas, museums, cafes, bars and restaurants. And in the center of it all – the two main venues for social gatherings, one atrium is located under the roof, the second – under the open sky. The amphitheatre accommodates 35 thousand people. Interestingly, under the square are railroad tracks on which trains arrive at the station Flinders street station nearby. The square offers stunning views of the South Bank of the Yarra river and parks located there.

I must say that the place where today is Federation square, has always played a prominent role in the history of Melbourne: at various times housed the depot, railway station, Princes bridge, the mosque. Only in 1997 it was decided to renovate this vast space between downtown and the river, which gave rise to the complex of buildings and public places, invariably attracts residents and tourists. All buildings in the area are irregular in shape – the designers call them "fragments", and this name stuck and is used today. The official opening of Federation square was held in 2002. Every year there is about a thousand different activities that are being visited by over 8 million people! It's the second most popular tourist attraction in Victoria.
