Templo Mayor Photo: Templo Mayor

Templo Mayor - the complex of historic buildings, sometimes called the pyramid of Huitzilopochtli. With its main Spanish name translates as "big temple". Once it housed the Aztecs - Tenochtitlan, now it is one of the areas of modern Mexico city.

In the height of the pyramid reached 60 meters and was the highest architectural structure at that time. At the base of the temple was 100 on 80 meters. On top of the pyramid was located two temples erected in honor of the sun God and war Huitzilopochtli and the rain God and fertility - Tlaloc.

The construction of the Templo Mayor, the scientists presumably attributed to 1325. In the early 16th century, the Church became the religious center for all of the Aztecs, living on the territory of modern Mexico. Over time the temple was erected a number of small buildings which would form the whole historical complex. Well preserved one of the most interesting platforms leading up to the temple, it is the stand of the skull, called [tsompantli].

In 1521, when here came the conquistadors led by hernán cortés, a large part of the Templo Mayor and the adjacent territory conquerors literally razed to the ground. The lower part of the ruins were discovered on February 21, 1978, during the laying of the cable. Workers stumbled upon a large stone disk with a diameter of not less than 3 meters, which had a thickness of 30 cm and a weight of more than 8 tons. The find was reported to scientists, who for four years excavated. Only found 13 of destroyed buildings.

Since 1982 there is a Museum, the ruins are also available to visitors.
