Gateway of India represent a basalt arch 26 meters high, and are located in the southern part of the city of Mumbai, near Apollo Bunder, near the water's edge in the main city port. The building is a monument of British rule in India. The arch was built to commemorate the visit to India by king George V and Queen Mary in 1911. The chief architect of the project was George Wittet. The construction was initiated in the same year, but only in 1915 it was moved from a dead point and continued until 1924, when took place the solemn opening of the monument. Therefore, a high-ranking guests, in honor of whom the project was intended, and could see only a cardboard model of the arch.

Gateway of India is made in the Indo-Saracenic style, i.e. a mixture of Muslim, Hindu and European styles. The Central dome has a height of 15 meters and a diameter of 25 meters. On both sides of the arch are halls, each of which can accommodate up to 600 people.

The project required not only time consuming but also a significant financial investment. Almost all the construction was financed by the government of India, but unfortunately, funding for construction of the access road is not found, therefore the arch stands apart from the main road. Also, almost the entire front part of the harbour was rebuilt, so all the buildings were in harmony with the Indian triumphal arch.

Gateway of India may also be called the gateway of India, as it is through them solemnly took the last British troops left the Indian shore in 1948, when India got its long-awaited independence.
