The spring 22 may 1990 in a small Park, located near the building of the regional scientific library in the city of Murmansk was held the opening ceremony of the monument dedicated to the apostles brothers Cyril and Methodius. As you know, the brothers Cyril and Methodius were born in a family of distinguished military commander in the city called Thessaloniki that happened more than a thousand years ago. Methodius was the eldest of seven brothers, and Cyril Jr. Following the example of his father Methodius entered the military service and for 10 years was the Manager of one of the Slavic regions. Soon Methodius goes to the monastery, located on the coast of the sea of Marmara.
In his childhood and teenage years, Cyril was very keen on the "book thing", and then began to show his great ability in Sciences. Learning about the talented boy, he was called to the court of the Emperor to the capital and appointed the tutor of the young Emperor Michael the Third. The young talent mastered math, grammar, geometry, dialectics, astronomy and other Sciences. Some time later, Cyril began to study philosophy, but soon went to the monastery to his brother.
Some time after the visit of Byzantium Cyril decided to create on the basis of the Greek alphabet Slavic alphabet. So the brothers Cyril and Methodius became the founders of the literary written Slavic language, which was the impetus for the creation of the old Russian and old Bulgarian literary language.
The famous monument of the Slavic enlighteners appeared in Murmansk thanks to the work of the polar writers, on whose initiative 24 may 1986 for the first time in the Soviet Union held the celebration of the Day of Slavic culture and literature, soon became a national holiday.
In the spring of 1990, which coincided with the independence Day of Bulgaria, the Bulgarian Patriarch Maxim in the presence of Bulgarian and Soviet official persons performed the rite of consecration of the monument. At the same time a document was signed on the transfer of the monument to the government of Murmansk.
The monument of Cyril and Methodius is the author's copy of a famous sculptor from Bulgaria Vladimir Ginovski, and the original of this monument is located immediately in front of the building of the national library in Sofia, in which it is established to the date of the 1100th anniversary of the appearance of Slavic literature.
In Murmansk there are two statues, made of bronze, which symbolize his views inextinguishable candles. They are located on a concrete plinth set on consisting of 12 granite slabs base.
