New Athos cave is one of the largest caves in the territory of the Republic of Abkhazia. Located in the bowels of the Iberian mountains, the cave is a massive karst cavity, which amounts to about 1 million cubic meters of new Athos cave millions of years hid their secrets and has been investigated relatively recently - in 1961
Long time residents of New Athos drew a huge failure under the slope of the Iberian mountains. A big well with lost in the darkness of the steep walls was called the Bottomless pit. Down there no one dared. The first attempt to descend into the black mouth of the cave was taken by a local resident Givi Smyr. And in 1961 there was organized a expedition to explore this mysterious place, resulting in the underground was opened a real miracle.
For visitors to new Athos cave was discovered in 1975, the length of the route in the cave is about 2 km the route passes through the halls 8: Anakopia, sled, Cavers, Deer, Corallite gallery, gallery Auhau, Aperta hall and Apsny. Many halls are not yet available for the unprepared tourists.
The largest meeting room in the new Athos cave is the hall of the Muhajirs, and the highest hall of Explorers. In the new Athos cave has four entrances, three of them are artificial, and are specially made from the floor Disappearing lake drainage gallery.
