Lake Abrau is the largest freshwater lake in the Krasnodar region. It is located 14 km West of the city of Novorossiysk, on the Abrau Peninsula. The total area of the lake is 1, 6 sq. km..

The lake hides many mysteries associated with its origin. Some scientists claim that his depression is a remnant of the ancient Cimmerian freshwater swimming pool, which existed in the place of the Black sea over one million years ago, others that it was formed as a result of karstic sinkhole, and others associated with the appearance of this mysterious lake with a huge landslides - landslides formed at a very low sea level.

The waters of lake Abrau have a kind of emerald hue. There are no pine framing, nor high mountains, but despite this, the lake has a very picturesque appearance. On the coastal ridges grow maples and oaks.

Earlier in place of the reservoir was located Circassian settlement Abrego or Achiah, which means "failed". With Abkhaz Abrau-Durso, translated as "the four sources of failure", and since ancient Iranian as water, clear as the sky". Today, however, the lake is not very transparent. Its visibility is about one meter.

Lake Abrau is one of the few cultivated lakes where there is a boat dock, hotel, and the banks cleared of wild vegetation. In the summer it is very warm, so here comes a lot of tourists. Besides all this, the lake Abrau is the only source of agricultural, industrial, household and drinking water supply of the village. That is why protecting the lake from pollution is a priority.

In late 1974, lake Abrau was declared a monument of nature.
