Not far from the ancient city of Paphos, are the ruins of the ancient temple complex called the Asclepion, which was dedicated to the God of healing and medicine, Asclepius.

According to legend, Asclepius gave birth to a mortal woman, and he was an ordinary man, despite the fact that his father was considered Apollo himself. Little Asclepius was raised by the centaur Chiron, as Apollo was ordered to kill his mother – his beloved – for treason. Subsequently, in the art of healing, Asclepius has reached such heights that he could even raise the dead. Due to this his exceptional talent to heal people, after his death he rose again and was rewarded with immortality, becoming a God. The very Asclepius was revered in Ancient Greece and Rome.

Thanks to the efforts of archaeologists who discovered the ruins of the temple, now you can easily imagine how it looked once huge building many centuries ago. Temple complex in Paphos included several buildings, the main of which consisted of a series of terraces, one above the other. Around him was a large courtyard. At the top of the Central structure was the main temple, where was the sanctuary of Asclepius. In addition, medium terraces had been converted into a temple of Apollo, which was also highly esteemed by the inhabitants of ancient Paphos.

Apart from the fact that Asclepius was worshipped two gods, the temple was also an academic medical center: people came for medical help, there was also a "school" where everyone studied medical case.

Many scientists link the asclepeion with the legendary ancient Greek physician Hippocrates, believing that it is in honor of him, not Asclepius, and was built this temple.
