The main attraction of the island of Antiparos and its gem is the ancient cave. It is located in the southeastern part of the island and is considered one of the most beautiful and famous caves in the world. Magnificent natural creation is impressive with an abundance of beautiful stalactites and stalagmites of the most varied and bizarre forms.
The cave has a very long and interesting history. It is believed that people began to use this cave as a shelter since the Neolithic. This assumption is probably made on the basis of archaeological data, according to which since Neolithic times were inhabited these places. Later the cave was used as a sanctuary and place of worship to the goddess Artemis. And in the 4th century BC Macedonian generals used it as a refuge after the conspiracy against Alexander the great.
One of the first famous visitors of the cave is considered to be an ancient Greek lyric poet, Archilochus (728-650 BC), which called for the creation of nature in ancient times and even left a note. In 1673 it was visited by the French Ambassador in Constantinople, the Marquis de Nointel with his companions. It was then and was famous Christmas service, and stalagmite, very similar in shape to the altar, is called "the Holy table" and the Latin inscription on the memory of this event (the inscription has been preserved to our days). In September 1840 he visited the cave and the first king of Greece, Otto, with his wife Amalia.
During the Second world war, the occupation period, part of the cave was destroyed. Extensive restoration work was carried out in early 2000-ies and was funded by the EU. Were built barriers, stairs, and installed lighting, surveillance cameras and loudspeakers to inform visitors.
Near the entrance to the cave you can see the ancient stalagmite found in a cave. His age is estimated 45 million years. It is also considered the oldest in Europe. Near the entrance is a small white Church of St John, built in the 18th century.
Amazingly beautiful ancient cave famous throughout the world and every year it is visited by huge number of tourists.
