The tradition to put padlocks on the railing of the fence on the street of Janus Pannonius existed since the 80-ies. Of course, there are many legends concerning the first appearance here of locks. According to some old-timers of the city, the first locks were silent messages married ladies to their lovers, it was time for secret meetings. According to another version, the students of the University dormitories brought their locks from the cabinets, after graduating and obtaining a College education.
In any case, today the tradition has the force and is followed by the youth. In our days most people who want to hang padlocks on the railing are young couples, who see in this ceremony a symbol of unbreakable love for each other.
