Colony Park ("Island") is a landscape Park of Peterhof and was formed in the mid-nineteenth century on a deserted, partially swampy land that stretched South from the Upper garden. The authors of the project of the Park have become a garden master Peter Ivanovich Erler, architect Andrey Ivanovich, Voronikhin and engineer M. Pilsudski.
Colony Park is one of the small parks of Peterhof, its area is 29 hectares. Most of Colonist Holguin Park is a pond surrounding the alley silvery willows. The pond is decorated with two Islands, one of which is Olga's pavilion, and on the other, the Empress pavilion. Holguin pond got its name after the daughter of Emperor Nicholas I, Grand Duchess Olga.
In the eighteenth century, the land, which subsequently appeared on the Colony Park was desolate and deserted. At that time it was called the "Hunter's bog", because here in the Bush was infested with fowl. Under Nicholas I close the "hunter's bog" houses were erected, which were intended for German colonists. That is why the Park and became known as the Colony.
In 1838, the swamp was drained, and in its place dug a large pond. The length of the pond was equal to 470 meters, width – 300 meters, and the maximum depth is 2 meters. Its banks were reinforced with large stones and surrounded by an impressive dam, which was broken alley. Water for the pond was taken from Ropsha keys. Still pond Colony performs the role of the basin that feeds the Eastern complex of fountains in the Lower Park. In summer, Holguin pond was released swans.
In 1839 started the layout and landscaping of the Park, which ended by the end of 1841. During this period, was planted about 4,000 trees and over 7000 shrubs. The activities of the parks have continued further: was carried out by the redevelopment of the East side, elevated promontory that crashed into the lake and so on. Between the shore of the pond and the Islands went ferries, which were built for the moorings in the form of cast-iron vases on pedestals.
In 1842, on one of the Islands Holguin pond was started the construction of Tsaritsyn pavilion. Empress Alexandra wished that the pavilion was similar to the ancient Roman city of Pompey, who died in the eruption of the volcano Vesuvius, and was built in "Pompeian style". The pavilion was surrounded by a magnificent garden with fountains, gazebos, overgrown vegetation, corridors of espalier (light bars on arches or pillars), benches of marble and numerous sculptures.
In 1846, on another island Holguin pond was built of a peculiar structure in the style of southern Italian villas, which was called Holguin pavilion. It was erected in honour of Olga, the youngest daughter of Emperor Nicholas I, especially for her arrival in Russia for the first time after marriage as Queen of württemberg. From the building to the lake was built a staircase decorated with vases. The pavilion had a 3-ahalanui tower, on the flat roof of which was built deck with a trellis canopy, overgrown with greenery. On each floor of the tower was equipped in the same room with balcony, internal stone staircase connected the rooms are interconnected.
The rest of the territory was occupied by a small outdoor garden with narrow paths, which were adorned with statues, busts, marble tables and vases.
The island served as a place where came close friends and guests of the Imperial family for a morning coffee or afternoon tea, where riding in gondolas and boats, listened to the music.
Currently Tsaritsyn and Olgin pavilions on Islands Colony Park are museums, which opened in 2005 after a comprehensive restoration.
