Kirov square is the Central and main square of the capital of Karelia - Petrozavodsk city. The square is located the monuments of architecture of 18-19 centuries and a small square. Kirov square is the venue of most of the major events in the city.

The first plants that appeared on the square in the early 18th century there were two churches made of wood: Holy spirit and Peter and Paul. The last legend was designed by Peter the Great. After the completion of the Alexander factory in 1777 on the Kirov square were built two cathedrals, one of them is the Cathedral of Holy spirit, as well as two gymnasiums for men and women.

At different times of the Kirov area has had different names. In the 18th century the square had the name of the Fortress square, in 1860 Cathedral, 1923 – Freedom square, in 30 years – the area of Labor, 1944 – an area named after S. M. Kirov.

In 1956 in the square theatre was erected the building on three project architects: A. Maksimova, E. Chachma and S. Brodsky. The building was designed and decorated with painting under the guidance of academician S. Kononova. The theatre operates today and in it are the creative teams of Musical theatre and Russian Drama Theatre.

In 1965 the building, formerly a cinema "Triumph", was rebuilt in the national theatre. After the recent renovation the building was built a Small stage and a few additional floors above the wings of the building. Works there and a puppet theater.
