The pre-Cambrian Geology Museum was founded on may 18 in 1961 as an Autonomous unit within the overall structure of the Institute of Geology. It is located in the city of Petrozavodsk on Pushkinskaya street. Originally head of the Museum was Yudin Viktor Nikolaevich. At the moment the head of the Museum – Ruth A. Khazov.

The main part of the Museum's collection represents the field samples of the leading geologists of the Institute and various other organizations that are engaged in permanent employment in the territory of the Karelian Republic.

Despite the fact that the initial collection of the Museum was quite small at the moment, the Fund of the Museum of Geology is more than 3500 units to be stored, as well as Museum exhibition unfolded in two spacious halls.

In the lower hall there is an exhibition that presents three informative sections: Mineralogy, stomatitis Karelia and the whole world – this section is a unique collection that is unparalleled in any other Museum of the world; Quaternary sediments of Karelian Republic and the topography of the country. The upper hall is the exhibition devoted to the most important and significant issues of Geology, the Mineralogy and metallogeny of Fennoscandia.

Museum of Geology of the Karelian research centre conducts educational work in the face of constant practice. In addition, the Institute of Geology involved in the educational process dedicated to serious qualified training of specialists of the mining and geological-geophysical profile of the Petrozavodsk state University. The Museum hosts educational practices for students of specialized secondary and higher faculties of educational institutions of Karelia and Russia.
