The Church of Saint Marina is located on the southern Bulgarian city of Plovdiv. This is perhaps the most significant urban Orthodox Church. The first religious buildings in this place appeared in the period of antiquity.
About the fifth century there was a small Church, dedicated to St. Paul, destroyed a century later. Since then, the building of the temple was repeatedly destroyed and restored again. Last renovation took place in the mid-nineteenth century, which is called the period of the Bulgarian national revival.
The building of the Church is a Basilica, built of netesanov stone, the lower part of which is surrounded by an arcade with columns, this gives the Church the similarity with Byzantine religious architecture. Also close to the main building is unparalleled in Bulgaria seventeen six-tier wooden belfry.
In the interior of the temple, the most interesting is the iconostasis, a height of about 21 meters, which depicts biblical scenes and creatures. On the sides of the iconostasis are the images of the virgin Mary and Jesus Christ, created by Bulgarian master Stanislav Dospevski.
Picturesque architecture and atmosphere of antiquity surrounding the temple, made this place very popular among Christian pilgrims and ordinary tourists.
