The monastery of Saints Peter and Paul is located at 1650 meters above sea level in the Western Rhodopes, near the tourist centre of Byala cherkva, 30 km South-West of Plovdiv. It is the highest situated monastery in Bulgaria.

The monastery is also one of the oldest in the country. It was founded in the year 1083 by the Byzantine military commander of Georgian origin, Grigorii Bakuriani. Belotserkovskii the monastery became one of the many small Orthodox monasteries, built in the years near the village of Byala. The patron of the monastery in the middle ages were Holy healers Damian and Cosmas.

Probably due to its location high in the mountains the monastery remained intact during the Ottoman invasion in the late Xivveka. After about a century the final conquest of the Balkans, the Ottoman Empire began the forcible Islamization of the Bulgarian population. In the second half of the 17th century in the valley of Chepino Belotserkovskii the monastery was completely destroyed, and the village of Byala was renamed in Chepino.

Only in 1815 was restored monastery Church, and later in 1883 – and the abode itself, named in honor of Saints Peter and Paul. A new Church was erected on the ruins of destroyed. This is a single-nave building is cruciform in shape without a dome, with one apse and two microconchs. Originally it was decorated with wall paintings. The Church is entirely built of white stone, hence the name of the surrounding area – Belotserkovskaya. Originally the Church was not painted, it was decorated with frescoes only in 1979-1981 Here is a beautiful icon of St. Nicholas the work of an unknown master.
