In the Bulgarian city of Plovdiv, in the North of the old town, the ruins of the ancient stadium of Philippopolis hotel. It was built during the times of the Roman Emperor Hadrian in the early second century. In 1923, the stadium was excavated. The visible part of the sports facilities – Sedona – located on the square in the northeast, and lies under the main street of Alexander Battenberg, the main pedestrian street of the Old town. On the area of Kamenica is the main entrance to the stadium.
The dimensions of the antique stadium – 240 meters in length, 50 in width. Monolithic blocks of marble were used for the erection of 14 rows of seats, which could be located about 30 thousand people. Places for the guests of honor were signed, like the tradition of the Odeon and the Ancient theatre. Today available for viewing partially restored the Northern edge of the stadium and part of the fortress wall (age 2-4). The ancient stadium in Plovdiv was built on the plan of the Delphic stadium, a total of 12 sports facilities of this type preserved in the world.
The stadium has organized sports and gladiatorial combat. Gladiators fought animals and each other. Sports competitions in Greek type of games called Piteskii, 214 year during the visit of Emperor Caracal game called Alexandria, and in 218, when the stadium was visited by the Emperor Elagabal, – Centricism. Games were organized by the General meeting of the Thracian province. The games were minted special coins, which depicted the scene of contests between the athletes and the faces dominating at certain times of the emperors. Many of these coins were found during excavations of the ancient stadium, they are included in the exhibition Sofia historical Museum.
Nowadays, being a reconstruction of the ancient Roman stadium in a special program implemented by the government of Plovdiv with the financial support of the European Union. In 1995, the site was declared a national treasure.
In addition, next to the stadium there are several interesting tourist sites: at the main entrance were found the remains of the city hours working on hydraulic mechanism, nearby is the memorial plaque, stating that in 1980 on its way from Athens to Moscow one night here was the Olympic flame.
