One of the most interesting and most visited sights of Rhodes Aquarium, located in the homonymous capital of the island. He is building a research center and includes a Museum.
The Aquarium building was built in 1934-36 the years to accommodate the Institute of biological research. The construction is made in art Deco style by the Italian architect Armando Barnabite. In 1945, after the liberation of the Islands of the Dodecanese from the Italian occupation, the center was renamed in Greek hydrobiological Institute and transferred to the Athens Academy. The aquarium and the Museum opened in 1963 and together with the Institute today by the National center of marine research and is known as the Hydrobiological station of Rhodes.
The aquarium is located on the ground floor of the building and are furnished in the form of glass underwater caves, thus creating a feeling of full immersion under water. Open system of circulation of sea water provides excellent natural conditions of life for a wide range of Mediterranean inhabitants. Here you can admire dolphins, sea turtles, mollusks, echinoderms, crabs, cuttlefish, rays and other inhabitants of the underwater world. A separate container is to accommodate new types of adaptation, as well as sea creatures needing treatment and protection (often used for hospitalization of sea turtles and seals nearby waters). In the Museum aquarium presents various embalmed sea creatures, among which the most interesting sharks, turtles, dolphins, etc. Also in the Museum you will find a lot of interesting information about the underwater world.
The main purpose of Hydrobiological station are Oceanographic research, study and conservation of species that are endangered, and the popularization of knowledge of the underwater depths. Regularly hosts a variety of educational programs, as well as specialized conferences, seminars and lectures.
