The Riga Synagogue is the only synagogue in Latvia, it is located in old Riga on the street pataas. In the late 19th century in Riga formed a religious community that has United the Jews living in the area. For construction were purchased land, and in 1903 obtained a building permit.
Engineered building of a synagogue by two people: the famous architect, art historian Wilhelm Neumann and aspiring architect Herman Seiberlich. The project has been changed several times, however, the construction of the building was completed in 1905.
The Riga Synagogue on Rue pataas was one of four synagogues in the capital. However, on 4 July 1941, after the capture of Riga by the German troops, all synagogues were burned except this. It did not burn only because the building was in Old Riga, and incendiaries were afraid that will burn the entire Old City. After the war, in the Synagogue, found in the Eastern wall of the compartment in which the Torah scrolls were hidden. It is assumed that the manuscript was sheltered by a priest of the Reformed Church of Gustav Showrooms. This Church is located near the synagogue.
In the Soviet period the Riga synagogue, one of the few existing in the USSR, became the center of Jewish life in the capital, in spite of all persecutions and supervision. In Soviet times there was an unofficial ban on Jewish religious life, however, the synagogue did not stop its work. Money for repairs is never given, therefore the few members of the religious community to the best of their forces and capabilities repaired and maintained building. The choir of the synagogue, the head of which was known Cantor Abram Abrami, was known not only in the Jewish community.
The Riga Synagogue on Rue Palavas – one of the few religious Riga buildings built in the art Nouveau style (Jugendstil). Interior and exterior decor, you can see ancient Egyptian and Babylonian motifs, but rather there are images of palm trees, and the flowers of the Lotus. During 2007-2009 was carried out restoration of the building. Major funding provided by the Euro-funds, in addition, financial support was provided by the state and about one hundred individuals who have made donations.
