The monument to the soldiers of the Kingdom of Sardinia at the foot of the Gasfort - one of the main attractions of Sevastopol, serving as a vivid reminder of the period of the Crimean war.
According to history, in the composition of the enemy coalition was composed of the soldiers of the Kingdom of Sardinia. Italian corps, consisting of seventeen thousand Italian soldiers stormed Sevastopol fortifications June 6, 1855. He participated in the battle of black river. Under the leadership of Lieutenant-General Marquis Alfonso Ferrero La Marmora corps landed at Balaklava, taking positions on the Telegraph height and grief Gasfort.
During the war, the Sardinians have lost more than two thousand people, not in battle, but from disease, particularly cholera died 2166 soldiers and officers. They are buried in the villages Kady-Koy and the Chambers. In 1882, the Italians were allowed to rebury the dead in one place on the mountain Gasfort. On top of the mountain built a fine chapel in the Lombard style, under the building which was equipped with a crypt. Near the chapel was dug 40-meter well. The remains of the Sardinians were buried in the necropolis, an area of 230 sq. m. Money for future maintenance of the cemetery and the chapel was allocated by the Italian government. Unfortunately, the Italian cemetery has been desecrated and borovilos.
During the fierce fighting during the great Patriotic war, the chapel and the necropolis were almost completely destroyed. After the war in the mountain Gasfort discovered deposits of fluxing limestone and started developing even more destroyed the Italian cemetery. Only in 2004 by the decree of the President of Ukraine on the site of a former Italian necropolis funds on the Italian side built a memorial dedicated to the memory of soldiers of the Kingdom of Sardinia, who died during the Crimean war. On the monument there is a memorial plate, where the Ukrainian and Italian bear: "Eternal memory of those killed in the Crimean war of 1855-1856, the soldiers of the Kingdom of Sardinia.
