The Madara Fortress Photo: The Fortress Madara

The Madara fortress is an old building located on the Madara plateau on the mountain top. It is in the territory of the archaeological reserve Madara. The fortification was built around the IV century, in the period of late antiquity, and existed until 1386 (or 1388), when it was captured by the Turks.

The name "Madara", according to some scientists, is derived from another name – Majar (Madjarska fortress), which, in turn, had a short period when the consolidation was dominated by the Hungarians who took her. Others believe that the building was named in honor of the Roman General Madara, who became famous for having defeated the Scythians during their invasion of Moesia is an ancient country located between the Balkans and the Lower Danube.

The fortress was repeatedly destroyed and rebuilt. After its capture by the Turks, it fell into disrepair. To this day preserved only fragments of the ramparts, as well as some residential structures and outbuildings on the territory of the fortifications.

To get to the top, where stands the fortress, climbing the 386 steps hewn in the rock stairs.

Near the ruins of the ancient fortification is another archaeological site, the famous Madara horseman (attraction, a UNESCO world cultural heritage site by UNESCO).
