The history of the resurrection Cathedral connected with the history of the miraculous icon of Shuya our lady of Smolensk. In the 54th year of the XVII century in Shuya was rampant global plague. Citizens, frightened by the disease, decided to paint an icon of our lady of Smolensk. The icon was created Gerasim Tihonov. As soon as the icon was in the resurrection Church, the miracles began. One of them was the end of the epidemic. When the painter began work on writing the icon, he performed original sketches. The next day Gerasim saw that the outline was modified and does not look like the original. Thus, the position of the Baby Jesus and his right leg was not in a position in which he drew before this. Tihanov considered as a bug and corrected written. However, on the third day he with fear found the same image of Jesus. Not correcting what he saw, tihanov considered it a miracle and told the authorities about it and the locals. The townspeople were surprised and scared this wonder and with awe praising God. Tihanov finished the same icon as she herself had acertadas. One of the wonders from this icon – extraordinary light emanating from her when she was brought to Church. Also occurred the healing of the mad boy Yasha Grigorieva. Healing from ulcers caused especial veneration by the people of the Holy icon. Came here many people who are possessed by different kinds of ailments, and was healed. About it in 1667 learned Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich and Patriarch Josyf. To study these important circumstances to Shuya arrived by a special Commission, which confirmed the truth of miracles, and the icon was named Smolensk Shuya the mother of God.

About 40 metres from the Cathedral is dominated by the massive bell tower. It consists of four tiers. The bell tower is decorated with columns and pilasters. The height of the bell tower is 106 meters. It is the highest in Europe, the bell tower stands separately from the Church.

Its construction was started in 1810. The end of the work occurred in 1832. The construction of the building began Turin architect Maricelli. But at the third tier of the structure collapsed. Maricelli escaped, and the erection of a belfry finished Vladimir peasant Mikhail Savvateev under the supervision of the provincial architect Perov. The third tier of the bell tower was equipped with 11 bells. The most remarkable of these was the bell, which was raised manually in 1891, the birthday of Emperor Nicholas II. This bell was cast in Moscow Xenophon Verevkina in honor of the rescue of Tsar Alexander III and his family in 1888 during the train crash, which occurred near Kharkov.
