Sofia zoo is located in the South of the city, near the Vitosha mountain. It is the oldest and largest Zoological Park in the Balkans. The zoo occupies two hundred and fifty acres, animals presents about three hundred species, the total number of individuals of nearly a thousand. Sofia zoo is on the list of most important Bulgarian turobektov.

It is believed that the history of the zoo began with birds. In 1888 Prince Ferdinand, who was a great lover of birds, laid Zoological gardens. It is inhabited by rhinos, elephants, hippos, wild boars, bison, crocodiles, sheep, antelope, bears, lynxes, tigers, lions, camels, zebras and others. In the kennel for monkeys live monkeys, baboons, hamadryas, cat lemurs, galimany. A huge variety of birds due to historically, today the Park is home to Golden eagle, Griffon vulture, Egyptian vulture, Buzzard, tawny owl, eagle owl, various species of owls, flamingos, pheasants, and ostriches, and many others. There are at the zoo and a large aquarium, which contains about one hundred species of fish, including exceptionally rare.
