The Rotunda Of St. George – old landmark and at the same time, active Church located in the capital of Bulgaria, Sofia. Erected in the early fourth century, during the reign of the Roman Emperor Constantine I the Great and flourishing of ancient Sofia (then called Serdica). The Rotunda Of St. George – Sofia is the oldest building surviving intact. Is a cylindrical domed building with a height of about 14 meters and a diameter of more than 9 meters. The altar room in the shape of a square, the sides of which are four symmetrically spaced niches.
Originally the building had no religious purpose, but after the recognition by Rome of Christianity was transformed first into a baptistery, and later, during the reign of Justinian the Great – in a house of worship. Then the temple was given the name in honor of St. George. During the Ottoman rule, in the first half of the XVI century, the frescoes were painted over with white paint, and the Church became a mosque with the name Gül-Gamasy. After the liberation of Bulgaria (1893) Church for some time was the mausoleum of Prince Alexander Battenberg.
In 1913 in the temple restoration works were carried out. Now the rotunda of St. George is an active Church, in which divine services daily in the Church Slavonic language.
