Central Museum of communications named after Alexander Stepanovich Popov is one of the oldest Russian scientific and technical museums. Located in Central St. Petersburg, close to St. Isaac's square, in the former Palace of Chancellor Alexander Andreyevich Bezborodko – chief Director of posts. Later the building was owned by the Postal Department.
The Museum was founded in September of 1872 and dedicated to the history of development of various types of communication, including mail, Telegraph, radio. Initially was established as a Telegraph Museum on the idea of Karl Lueders – Director of the Telegraph Department. At the origins of its birth and development Nicholas stood whole Slavinsky. Until 1911 he worked for the I-th Director of the Museum. In the period from 1884 to 1919, the institution existed as Postal and telegraphic Museum. From 1924 it was renamed the national Museum of communications, and since 1945 has become Central Museum of communications.
In 1974 the Museum was closed due to an emergency condition of the building and necessary repairs. In 2000 a project was developed for the development of the Museum, which provided its opening in 2003. In 2003 the reconstruction of the building was completed.
The Museum presents exhibits and materials on the history of mail and postage stamps, including postal cards and letters that have passed the mail, stamped envelopes, rare archival materials showing the history of mail in our country. These exhibits provide an opportunity to trace the evolution of postal items and their clearance from the historical period of the XVIII-XIX centuries before the creation of mail-art, one of the modern trends in art.
The Museum houses Gocollege signs of postal payment of the Russian Federation, which is great value for philatelists, not only Russia, but all over the world. It also contains Royal decrees, vintage travel certificates, I radio A. S. Popov, book I of the civil communications satellite "Luch-15" and other exposed materials.
The Museum collection devices Alexander Stepanovich Popov beginning be drawn up in 1926-1927. Now it includes most of the recorded heritage Popova, including devices that belong to the time of the invention of wireless telegraphy, the I-th instances of storm indicator and radio. The Museum has a special hall devoted to A. S. Popov, and in the archive there is documentary Fund of the inventor.
Also in the Museum you can visit the interactive hall "Physical foundations of telecommunications" on key physical phenomena, history of inventions, the history of technology of all kinds of telecommunication-based collection of rarities and their analogues interactive (multimedia products and layouts). In addition, all exhibition halls of the Museum is equipped with touchscreen panels that offer visitors a more detailed historical information and photos and videos.
