Resurrection Cathedral Photo: the Cathedral of the resurrection

The resurrection Cathedral, the oldest stone building and the main Orthodox temple of the city of Sumy is located on the street too. The Cathedral is a wonderful example of Ukrainian Baroque.

Resurrection Church was built in the late 17 - early 18 century with funds Sumy colonels Gerasim and Andrew Kondratieff. The Church served as the burial place of all kinds of Kondratieff. Some time she also served as normal for the "stone" defensive function until the end of the 18th century,

According to the legend, during the construction of a temple in the wall was bricked up sister G. Kondratiev – Maria, who was the ataman of the robbers gang, robbing residents. After the robbers grabbed his brother was taken hard but fair decision - Mure evil sister in the walls of the Church. Indeed, the survey of the temple were found the remains of a woman, and found the moves that led to the river Psel.

In Soviet times, the premises of the resurrection Church was used for storage. With time in the temple for a long time housed the art Department of the Sumy art Museum. Unfortunately, the original appearance of the Cathedral has not been preserved. In the 1970s in the Cathedral underwent considerable restoration work, which the Church acquired its modern look.

Holy resurrection Cathedral is very valuable to the churches, since it harmoniously combines the characteristics of both the stone and Ukrainian wooden architecture. The main feature of the Shrine is that it has two levels.

In 1991, after Ukraine's independence, resurrection Church was the only Church, transferred to the religious community of the UOC-KP, as all the other temples are buildings. Today the Church of the resurrection of the city of Sumy is the Cathedral of the Sumy eparchy of the UOC of the Kyiv Patriarchate.
