One of the most beautiful temples in the city of Sumy is the Holy Trinity Cathedral, located at Trinity street, 24. The Foundation of the Church was held in may 1901 by the German architect G. Scholz, hired "sugar Emperor" P. Kharitonenko. Project Church wall and mosaic floor was made by the famous architect A. Shchusev. The construction of the Church lasted intermittently until 1915, the consecration of the Cathedral was originally planned for 26 September 1914, but because of the death of P. Kharitonenko, who financed the construction of the Shrine, it was delayed for many years.
Hard times had to endure to Holy Trinity Cathedral during the First world war and then civil wars. In Soviet times the Church was used as a house of organ music. Tool made in the Czech Republic, was first heard in the walls of the Cathedral in Sumy November 1986 And only in 1996 part of the temple was returned to believers. The organ is now located in the building of the Sumy oblast Philharmonic.
Today the Church has not the best look. But despite this, it is now noticeable a luxury that the city could afford almost 200 years ago. Single and square in plan, the Trinity Cathedral was designed in a style that combines elements of classicism and Baroque, the type of famous monuments of the capital's architecture - the Trinity-Izmailovsky and St. Isaac Cathedral in St. Petersburg. Three of the temple's facade is decorated with a portico with Corinthian columns. The Western facade is decorated with the adjacent high four-storey bell tower. The marble iconostasis of the Trinity Cathedral, not preserved. Stained glass "Trinity" in the interior of the temple was completed with the participation of K. Petrov-Vodkin. Twelve bells were cast in Moscow at the plant brothers Samhini.
A monument of neoclassical architecture of the early 20th century - Sumy Trinity Cathedral belongs to the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (Moscow Patriarchate).
