Great Guild hall, built in 1407-1417., is the second largest secular medieval building in Tallinn. The building was used for meetings.
Great Guild United merchants and was designed to protect their interests. Guild members were elected mayor and Ratmanov. A member of the Guild could be married a merchant, who had a house in Tallinn. Out-of-towners not everyone could join the Guild, only the one who decided to stay in Tallinn forever. In addition, the foreigner had to marry the widow of a member of the Guild.
The high level of prosperity and influence of the Guild members show the huge size of the building and its elegant appearance. Small coat of arms of Tallinn in the form of a white cross on a red background, would serve as the emblem of a Large Guild. In the area of the lane Bercy (Stock) was the utility room of the Guild. From Pikk street was situated excise camera and the store of silver, and from the street Barking was the so-called "chamber of the bride" and the apartment of the sender.
The facade of the building of the Great Guild decorates the coat of arms and on the front door hangs a castle Dating from 1430 year. The appearance and interior of the building has survived from the 15th century almost unchanged.
Now in the Great Guild hall is the Estonian history Museum, which re-opened in June 2011. The Museum is a permanent exhibition which tells the history of the city from ancient times to the late 20th century. Movies and interactive exhibitions will tell of the struggle of our ancestors for survival for the last 11 thousand years.
