The Temple Of Artemis Photo: The Temple Of Artemis

The temple of Artemis in Corfu, once a monumental construction built during the archaic style in about 580 BC in the ancient city of Kerkyra. The temple was dedicated to the goddess Artemis and functioned as a sanctuary. Its ruins were discovered during archaeological excavations near the Villa Mon repos. This temple is known as the first building, designed in the Doric style exclusively of stone and combines all the basic elements of the Doric architecture.

The temple was a rectangular building, surrounded by a colonnade (8 columns on the front and back and 17 columns on each side) in the style of pseudoperipteral, and was the largest sanctuary of its time. Its width was 77 feet) and a length of 161 ft. The front and rear parts of the temple were decorated with huge pediment with sculptures of mythological characters. To this day preserved only one of them. Were also found relief metope fragments of the temple.

The most valuable find in the ruins of the temple of Artemis is considered a huge seventeen pediment with sculpted image of the Gorgon Medusa, discovered in 1911. It is the oldest pediment of a Greek temple, was found today, and the best example of archaic sculpture. To see this important historical relic today in the Archaeological Museum of Corfu town, which was built in 1962-1965, specifically to accommodate the impressive artifacts from the temple of Artemis.

The temple of Artemis in Corfu is considered one of 150 masterpieces of Western architecture and a milestone in ancient Greek architecture. To our days, little remains of the once majestic building, but what found by archaeologists during excavations, it was quite informative to recreate the architectural details of the temple.
