Avlona is a small pretty village in the Eastern part of the Greek island of Evia (Euboea). The settlement is located just 13 km North-East of Aliveri, 15 km South of Kimi and about 68 km East from the town of Chalkis (the administrative centre of the island).

The territory that is now modern Avlona, has been inhabited since time immemorial. The first written sources that speak of the existence of this settlement date back to the 6th century. But, as historians suggest, modern Avlona was founded only in the 10-11 centuries. In the 15th century, during the rule of the island from the Venetians, here for defensive purposes was built 12 watchtowers. One of these towers and today stands proudly in the centre of the village and is his calling card.

Descending in the form of an amphitheatre on the slopes of a lush hill, located in the center of a fertile valley, the village Avlona is perhaps one of the most picturesque villages of Evia. Walking through the narrow winding streets of the historic centre of this picturesque town will bring you a lot of fun, and cozy in local taverns you can relax and enjoy the excellent local cuisine.

In addition to the old Venetian tower in Avlona deserves special attention and the Church of St. Nicholas.

Near Avlona is one of the largest and oldest temples of Evia – Dimitrios Church (11th century), built on the ruins of an ancient sanctuary of Artemis. Ancient Byzantine frescoes that adorn the Church, is sufficiently well preserved to our days and are of great artistic and historical value.

If you are planning your holiday on the island of Evia in October, you should definitely visit the famous fair Avlone. This is an annual traditional event, which local residents organize to celebrate the end of grape harvest begins October 6th and lasts eight days.
