One of the many attractions of the capital of Greek Macedonia Thessaloniki, which is definitely worth a visit, is the most interesting Ethnographic Museum. It was founded in 1973 "the Macedonian Association for the education".
The ethnographic Museum, housed in a building known as "Old government house", as it was originally privately owned, the Villa was handed over to the municipality of Thessaloniki and was used as the residence of the Governor, and then the Minister of Northern Greece. The building was built in 1905 by the architect Eli Modiano in a picturesque place on the shore of the sea (the area of the estate as a whole is 5 ha). This eclectic four-storey building (basement, 1st and 2nd floors and attic) with elements of art Nouveau. Particularly impressive is the magnificent double balcony with stunning sea views.
The exhibits at the Museum, perfectly illustrates the history of the development of the culture and traditions of Macedonia and Thrace. The Museum collection is extensive and diverse (approximately 15,000 items). Here you can see textiles, embroidery, traditional costumes, furniture, musical instruments, wood carvings, weapons, household items, tools, woodworking and Metalworking equipment and much more. The Museum has unique specialized library, as well as an impressive photo archive and the library.
The main purpose of the Ethnographic Museum is to acquaint you with the history, traditions and culture of the region and their popularization among the younger generation.
