Among the abundance of interesting sights of the capital of Greek Macedonia Thessaloniki special attention, undoubtedly, deserves the Macedonian Museum of contemporary art.

The Museum was founded in 1979 by a visionary group of like-minded people. The initiator of creation of the Museum was made by Maro Lagia and fully supported by the famous Greek collector and patron Alexandros Iolas. Actually, it is a private collection donated by Iolas and composed of the 47 modern art, and became the basis for the permanent exhibition of the Museum. A gesture made by Alexandros Iolas, had inspired many famous collectors (including Magda, Cozia, Franz Geiger, Alexandros and Dorothea Xidis, Georgios Aperis, etc.) and artists have also donated to the Museum many of its priceless treasures.

Today in the Macedonian Museum features more than 2,000 exhibits, including the work of well-known Greek and foreign artists. Here you can see paintings, sculptures, installations, prints, photographs and more. The Museum collection is constantly replenished by new donations from collectors, artists, gallery owners and private persons.

In addition to the permanent exhibition the Museum also regularly hosts temporary exhibitions, which were presented and the work of such prominent representatives of contemporary art as Yiannis Tsarouhis, Fotios Kontoglou, Andy Warhol, Nikos Hatzikiriakos-Gikas, Stefan Antonakos, Robert Delaunay, Max Ernst, Joseph Beuys, David Hockney, Ernst Barlach, Max Beckmann, Pesticides, Takis, and many others.

The Museum library, which is also available for the General public, holds more than 2500 specialized books and periodicals on contemporary art, as well as directories, and excellent collection of audio and videos.

Specially designed by the administration of Museum education programs, including for children under the age of 3, 5-13 years, is aimed at acquaintance with contemporary art and its popularization, and also to raise the cultural level of the population in General.
