Photo: the White tower
The white tower on the waterfront – the most famous landmark of the city. In 1430 the Turks have erected three towers to strengthen the 8-km long fortification wall. From the XVIII century, the building housed the guardhouse and jail. After the city was liberated from the Turks, the tower was whitewashed as a sign of cleansing from the past – hence the name of the tower. Now the whitewash is gone and the tower looks the same as in the Middle ages.
Now it houses the exposition of the Museum of history and art of the city. Note the few wonderful icons and frescoes. From the roof of the tower offers a magnificent view of the city and the Bay.
