The Church of the Holy spirit is a Roman Catholic Church located in Torun. Until 1945, was a Lutheran Church, and then passed into the hands of the Jesuits.
The need to build a new Church was born in Torun, in the aftermath of religious clashes between Catholics and Protestants that broke out in the city in July 1724. After fundraising in the city and abroad, including in Germany, England and Denmark, father Krzysztof Andrzej Henryk announced the design competition for the project of the new Church. In 1741, was selected the work of a young architect from Dresden Andreas Adam Bach.
Construction work began two years later, but they were soon interrupted as a result of adverse socio-political situation. Against the construction were made by radical Catholics. As a result, king August III issued a ban on the construction of the Church, fearing the emergence of new religious clashes. In 1754, was given permission to build a modest house of worship, which was to irritate the Catholics, and was not able to remind the Church. So there was a need for a new architectural project. Was selected as a young 26-year-old master from Torun Ephraim Kroger. In July 1756, a solemn opening of the Church. The Church is 46 metres long and 14 metres high could accommodate 1300 members. In 1899, was built the tower in neo-Baroque style with a height of 64 meters, designed by Hugo Hartung.
To the present day in the Church of the Holy spirit preserved many original elements of the interior decoration. Visitors can admire the altar of the eighteenth century in the Rococo style. Beautiful doors created by the workshops of the city, depict scenes of martyrdom and resurrection of Christ. The walls of the Church is decorated with Baroque paintings of the first half of the eighteenth century.
