Tower Dovecote Photo: Tower Dovecote

Tower-Pigeon – preserved part of the city walls of the Old Town in Torun. Tower Dovecote was built in the fourteenth century. Rectangular defensive tower was impressive sizes: 11, 2 x 5, 8 meters. Brick building with a hip roof and five skylights is the highest preserved part of the city fortifications. The dovecote is located between the Monastery gates and gates Sailors.

The facade of the tower was once richly decorated with pointed arches, tracery of plaster ornaments and painting. Currently most of the decoration is lost.

In the nineteenth century the tower lost its defensive function, after which it was converted into a dwelling house. My present name of the tower owes much to the nineteenth century. At that time in the southern and Eastern facades were installed traps for pigeons. Pigeon post was used by the Prussian authorities for quick interaction with the fortress.

Currently the Old town is the main tourist attraction in Torun. Of the eight city gates, built in the fourteenth century, to the present day remained three: Bridge, Monastery gate and Sailors. The city of Torun was 33 fortified towers, today you can see only eight, among which the Tower Dovecote.
