The Church Of St. Sergius Of Radonezh Photo: Church Of St. Sergius Of Radonezh

The Church of St. Sergius of Radonezh, belonging to St. Catherine's monastery is located in the center one-story historical building Satirical. In 1749 it was wooden resurrection Church, which was built on the donations of the parishioners. In the period of Lithuanian invasion the Church was ruined, was long in ruins.

The Church in its present form was built in 1775 - 1780 by the merchant G. Bogdanova. At the beginning of the construction of the temple was renamed with the blessing of Archbishop Arseny in the name of St. Sergius of Radonezh. The name was not chosen randomly. At this time Archbishop Arseny just returned from the Trinity-Sergius Lavra, where he went to worship the relics of St. Sergius. There he was presented with the icon with a particle of the relics of the great Saint.

The construction of the temple was completed in 1780. Originally a stone Church had a small warm a chapel in honour of the prophet Elijah. From the former resurrection Church re-built in stone, the temple has had an ancient icon of the resurrection of Christ, which is located at the Western entrance to the temple, on the right pillar.

In 1843 the funds of the Tver merchant M. Bogdanov were built three-tiered bell tower and refectory with Ilyinsky and Alekseevsky aisles (architect I. F. Lvov). All the buildings in the style of late classicism.

The Church was closed in 1930. The Western ledge and the top two tiers of the bell tower were demolished. In 1977 by the architect A. V. Sokolov was carried out the restoration of the temple – the lower part of the temple was completed the drum with an onion dome above him. The divine services were resumed in October 2004.

The temple is built in typical Tver traditions of early classicism. The Church building is plastered brick, with white stone plinth. The temple was built by the longitudinal-axial three-schema. A double-height rectangular building has one Chapter and a five-sided apse. Rectangular wide refectory, located on the West side, includes the lower tier of the bell tower. Not extant upper tiers of square-shaped second and third round had large openings ringing in the arch. Disassembled the Western ledge was with pilaster portico and triangular pediment. The facades of the building are separated by a cornice on two tiers, which correspond to window openings of the first and second light. The angles of the first tier processed rustic pilasters, and the second – paneled. Window skylight in the form of arches recessed in a rectangular high niches, decorated with garlands (this is the detail of the decor was widespread in Tver architecture of early classicism).
The facades of the refectory quite restrained. Wall covers rust belt, the window end of rolling ridges. Cloistered vault covers the quadrangle. Surviving nests to Tromp in the upper corners of the volume suggests that the temple was supposed to complete the octagon. But for some reason "octagon on square", is quite characteristic of Tver architecture of the 18th century, was not completed. The refectory is covered by torispherical arch and bell bottom tier – the crusade.
