The monastery of the resurrection Photo: the monastery of the resurrection

In Uglich is an ancient resurrection monastery, the first mention of which was never found. There is evidence that at the end of the 14th century on the location of the monastery acted monastery, which consisted entirely of wooden buildings; was this monastery near the shore, where Trinity Creek flows into the Volga. In the first decades of the 16th century at the monastery were buried Uglich is known landowners by name Dirty descended from the Romanovs.

Later, in 1674, this area was begun full-scale stone construction. Funds for these works were generously donated by Jonah Metropolitan of Rostov, who had become a monk in some monastery.

Once the work on the construction of the monastic complex were completed, everyone was amazed by its incredible views – the band itself was somewhat stretched by a line passing from North to South, which created a strong impression on either side. Parts of the monastery were: Mary of Egypt Church and bell tower, the Cathedral of the resurrection, Church of the Hodegetria with the refectory bathroom. Around the perimeter of the complex was enclosed by a fence, equipped with Holy Gates – today previously lost the fence was fully restored. The last of the construction was completed in 1677.

The main temple of the monastery is the Cathedral of the resurrection, which is very close in appearance to the churches of Rostov the Great. Cathedral with five domes, stands on an elevated basement, has a powerful Central drum, two side altars, consecrated in honor of Jacob and the Archangel Michael. From the West side to him belongs ambulatories along the perimeter of the Cathedral and leading to the belfry and refectory room, emphasizing the integrity of the entire complex. Gallery, the Central cylinder and the walls of the Cathedral is beautifully decorated with glazed tiles, which are also located on the walls of the belfry. Immediately behind the iconostasis is preserved fragments of ancient wall paintings, some were supplemented in the 19th century.

Belfry, part of the resurrection monastery seems small, but it consists of four tiers. The lower level is equipped with a gate, which serve to enter the territory of the yard. Service is the second tier, to which is attached gallery, and the third tier has the Church, consecrated in the name of Mary of Egypt; the fourth tier is represented by a belfry with arched openings.

The Church of the Smolensk icon of our lady has a refectory room and has another name – Odigitrievsky. The Church exhibited the clock tower, where before there was a striking clock. Originally the tower was located in a tent, but in the 19th century it was replaced with more appropriate coverage.

When the monastery was chosen as a new place, only then it turned out that it is not very well chosen, because it has a weak sandy soil, while it is still washed by groundwater from below. This whole situation led to the fact that many buildings started to collapse.

The abolition of the monastery took place in 1764, and the complex was given to the parish as the parish Church. Holy gate and fence had been dismantled. At the beginning of the earlier 20th century the monastery was in a terrible state, because his face was badly distorted. The parish tried to carry out restructuring, but it worsened his condition.

In time the Soviet government, the parish immediately abolished. In the 1930s, it started the construction of the Uglich hydroelectric power station, the water level in the Volga river has risen considerably – it was already clear that the monastic buildings can't be saved. But the complex stood until the 1950's, when he began his global restoration. New technologies have helped to significantly strengthen the soil and completely prevented the danger of collapsing buildings.

In mid-1999, the monastery of the resurrection was given to the Church, and it again began to act masculine abode. Over time it was restored and again today, this complex is one of the most famous in all of Uglich. At the monastery again have the Holy gate and fence, and worship in the churches are held regularly.
