One of the most famous houses in Ulm – Kornhaus was built in 1954. The project architect was Kaspar Schmid, the house was conceived as a three-storey, high arches. Interestingly, earlier on the same place was a warehouse for grain, but it completely burned down in one of the fires. The decision to build a new home with the same assignment was due to functional necessity to store grain for the needs of residents and for sale.
The style in which the architect has completed the project itself, and then the builders have implemented it in practice – Renaissance. Even today, when the building was completely redone inside and is quite a modern center for exhibitions, conferences and concerts, it can feel a subtle romantic touch distant 16th century.
The original building was built by all the rules of granaries: the original barn of logs, plastered on top. Interesting timbered Gables gave him exquisite style and attention to construction. Portals on the North and South sides were specially conceived in different forms, it is one of the distinctive features of the architectural style. So, the southern portal was a glaring example of late Gothic architecture, supplemented by some details that are typical for the Renaissance.
Unfortunately, in the days of the RAID on Ulm in 1944 Kornhaus was virtually destroyed. After the Second World war it was rebuilt using the surviving drawings and old photographs, but it touched only external decoration. The decision to make the inside of this house modern premises, was correct: today this building has a reputation in the business and commercial circles of the city.
