In the city of Varna is the Church, which is named after St. Nicholas of Myra. It is located on the main street in the sea capital of Bulgaria and is, along with the Cathedral of the Dormition, one of the most beautiful religious buildings in the city.
According to legend, the temple was built because of a promise made before God one Russian merchant marine. During one of his journeys in the sea erupted in a strong storm. Frightened, the seller called to St. Nicholas, patron of sailors and fishermen, with a plea: if he stays alive and safely get to the house, you will certainly usher in the Varna Church dedicated to this Saint. The promise was fulfilled – the dealer was allocated for the construction of the temple 50 000. Historians argue that this is hardly the only case, when the Church was built at the expense of only one person.
Construction of the Basilica began in 1859 and continued for several years. It is not known when he was consecrated the Church and when he was made the iconostasis. Long wall in the temple remained white. Only in 1961 by a group under the guidance of professors Nicholas kojouharova and Demetrius Hogenova began work on the decoration of the Church with frescoes. In 2000, carried out extensive restoration work, during which it was restored the murals in the sanctuary, new Windows inserted stained glass, renovated, porch, etc.
Beautiful monumental Basilica of St. Nicholas is the only sea Church in Bulgaria.
