Sofya Vasilyevna Kovalevskaya is a prominent scientist and the first Russian woman who became famous in the field of mathematics, as well as a respected correspondent of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences, an outstanding writer, a University Professor in Stockholm and active social and political leader. Memorial Museum of a name of Sofia is located in the village of Polimino, 25 km from the city of Velikie Luki in the previously existing estate of her father – General of the Corvin-Krukovsky, Vasily Vasilyevich.
Youth and adolescent years Kovalevskaya were held in her home village of Polimino, located on the shores of beautiful lake close to the road, which is the connecting link of Nevel and Velikiye Luki. The original records of the village date back to the 18th century – at that time it was a part of the vast estates of the Michelson I. In the village was the manor, built of wood ordinary house architecture. After Michelson died, in 1807 the estate was owned by his son Gregory.
