The Sofia side of the shaft, namely, Dmitrievskaya street is the Church of Peter and Paul. The construction of the Church was completed in 1406. The Church is an amazing building that is notable for the completeness and maturity, giving the eyes a truly fine example of the architecture typical of the 15th century.
The Church built their large rocks rocks of limestone, and the largest number of decorative elements made of brick. Brick stacked blades, dome and vaults. Architectural type Church is a cubic, single-headed. The facades of the buildings have three-way finished as a continuation of the combination of the overlap of the Central torispherical arch with a pair of polycarobonate. Should know that Novgorod architects 13-15 centuries in the corner clenia used polycarobonate vaults, the remaining members, excluding the average, were torispherical. This was achieved constructive basis for all three-lobed completions.
The facades of the Church building is particularly complete and strict proportions, and in the final areas accented expertly and succinctly drawn ornamental brick masonry, composite motifs which are found in the previously constructed monuments of Novgorod, springing from the middle of the 14th century. They are the corbels, carved their triangular cavities, pentagonal and round nishki, curb, sockets, relief crosses and arches to the frieze. On the facade, located on the South side, came to us as a five-membered composition consisting of three Windows and a pair of niches between them; it is topped with a decorative five bladed edge. Vertical rods-rollers beautifully decorated the apse of the Church, which tied a small semicircular arches.
The most important elements of interior decoration of the building is almost in the same measure repeated the traditional solution, which was developed in the second half of the 14th century. An important feature of the interior of the Church of Paul and Peter is the arrangement of the entrance to the loft is not in the thickness of the West wall that was often used in erection of Novgorod churches 12-15 centuries, but as a separate stone staircase, which was located in the northwestern part of the temple. It is this feature of the Church repeats the reception, which find applications architect famous Church of Theodore Stratelates in 1360.
In the 18th century on the South side of the Church was built of stone, the chapel of the Three Saints, and later with the Western side was attached a small bell tower.
Under the late 15th – early 16th century, the Church was divided into two floors. The Western part had choirs, which led in the North-Western corner of the staircase. Was allocated to the so-called lower tier, or a basement, and the Church itself was located on the second floor, i.e. "on the porch". Over previously built an ancient portal that has the acute form is the portal, carved in the time when the temple was divided into two floors, and on its sides there were remnants of ancient painting: on one side is depicted the apostles Paul and Peter, with another angel, holding a sword.
Pavel Gusev, who conducted the analysis of these images was based on the fact that the picture of Peter and Paul executed with oil paint in the manner of crafts-painting style, and painted angel executed in fresco technique. The researcher concluded that the paintings done in a completely different time, because the image of an angel refers to the period of the 16th century. Based on what kind of equipment was painted a picture of Peter and Paul, located on the right side of the portal, Gusev brought the Dating not only education, but also the transfer of the temple to the top floor in the 18th century.
The Church of Peter and Paul in the tanners set on the shores of the Magi, with its Eastern façade, facing directly to the river. Professionally drawn silhouette, perfect proportions and the correct location and are now making this beautiful monument is one of the most important parts of the "Eastern front", located on the Sophia side of Novgorod. But in due time, namely, during the Nazi occupation of the city of Novgorod, the Church suffered badly. In 1959 the Church was fully restored without changing the original forms.
