Life in the Netherlands is largely dependent on the sea, the Dutch have always been famous as a beautiful and brave sailors. Therefore, in the capital of the Netherlands could not see the Maritime Museum, which tells about the history of navigation.
Since 1973, the Museum is housed in the former Admiralty Arsenal, built in 1656. This time is called the Golden age – then Amsterdam was the largest port, a major center of international trade. The Arsenal contained guns, ammunition, sails, flags and other equipment for the Navy. Today, 350 years later, the Arsenal produces in us the same strong impression. In the early 2000-ies in the Museum underwent a major reconstruction, because the old building did not meet modern Museum standards.
The Museum tells the history of sailing not only in the Netherlands but throughout Europe. His exposition is presented in several sections. One of them tells of the Golden age of Dutch history – and that he would not have been possible without the sea and seafaring. Another section is devoted to the history of whaling, the following is the history of the Amsterdam port. The category of "Dark pages" tells the story of the slave trade, and the section "Sal, Laurie and sea circus" designed for the youngest visitors of the Museum – to 6.
In the Museum you can see paintings on the sea theme, old maps, tools and ship decoration.
Next to the Museum ship moored – a copy of the cargo ship "Amsterdam", similar to those in the eighteenth century was making flights from the Netherlands to the West Indies.
