The monument to the Fallen in Ancona was created between 1927 and 1930 for years by the architect Guido Cirilli, but inaugurated only in 1932, the year during his visit to the city of Benito Mussolini. The event was timed to the 10th anniversary of the fascist revolution.
Circular memorial is located on a high pedestal in Piazza IV Novembre in the quarter Passetto dedicated to the memory of all the fallen in the First World war, in which Ancona suffered heavy losses, not only on the front line, but also in the rear – in the bombing of the city of the Austro-Hungarian troops in 1915, the year. The monument is built of Istrian stone and is supported by eight Doric columns. The pedestal is decorated with images of swords and helmets – characters attack and defense. And in the center of the monument stands a small altar. Two wide staircases lead him straight to the sea. The frieze you can see the cut lines from a poem by Giacomo Leopardi "To Italy".
Today the Monument to the Fallen is one of the most impressive attractions of Ancona, the symbol of elegance and "stone" harmony. It serves as a kind of "closing" the point of a long side street of Viale della Vittoria. And the inhabitants of the city consider it one of the most important symbols of the Ancona. They say that with the sea this whole composition, including two staircases, similar to a flying eagle.
In small pine trees growing near the Monument to the Fallen, there are several playgrounds for children, lift, descending to the beach and the funicular station.
