Athens Academy has the official status of the National Academy of Greece, is the highest research establishment in the country. The Academy is supervised by the Ministry of education and religion of Greece. Founded by the Athenian Academy was March 18, 1926. It owes its name to the ancient Academy of Plato, founded in 385 BC, and named after the mythical hero of Acadia. Official Charter Academy divides its activities into three areas: natural science, art, morality, and political science.

The main building of the Academy is a masterpiece of neoclassical style, is famous Athenian trilogy together with the Athens University of Kapodistrias and the National library of Greece. The construction project is owned by the Danish architect Theophil von Hansen and recognized as the best masterpiece in Greece.

The building was constructed 28 years. The work was supervised by the architect Ernst Ziller. The first stone was laid in 1859 at the expense of patron Simon von Sina (Austrian entrepreneur), but due to political instability in 1864, the construction stopped. Four years later, work was resumed and in 1885 the building was completed. March 20, 1887, the main building was commissioned. Despite the fact that the building was originally prepared for the national Academy, in the absence of such, it was presented to the numismatic Museum. Later housed the Byzantine Museum and the State archive. 24 March 1926, the building was transferred to the newly established Athens Academy.

The building consists of a Central part and side wings. In front of the building there are two columns with statues of Apollo and Athena (works of famous Greek sculptor Leonidas Drosis). Also, before entering, you can see two seated statues of Socrates and Plato. Murals and art and design are the work of Austrian Christian Griepenkerl.

When the Athenian Academy has 12 research centers, 10 research offices, a library and Fund biomedical research.
