The Museum of Aveiro was founded in 1911 and is situated in a historic building of the former Dominican monastery of Jesus. The monastery was built in 1458. The façade of the building we see today dates from the eighteenth century. The building has three entrances with beautiful Gables, and a Central pediment of the building is decorated with the Royal coat of arms. Near the entrance stands a statue of St. Giovanni (John).

The atrium of the former monastery is now used as the lobby of the Museum. The original house of the Chapter, where meetings were held, and the Church, which dates from the XV century, with columns in the Renaissance style, as well as several chapels in the Manueline style, decorated tiles "Azulejos". The interior of the main chapel of the Church is decorated with the work of wood with gilding the sixteenth century. The walls are decorated with tiles "Azulejos", which depicts scenes from the life of Holy Joany, also hang paintings, which depict this Holy.

In the lower chapel, where he celebrated the Liturgy, is the tomb in which lie the remains of the Princess Juany, daughter of king Afonso V. the Tomb was begun by order of king Pedro II, but the ashes of the Princess moved there only in 1711. The tomb is decorated with colorful mosaics, made of Italian marble. Each side of the tomb are decorated with panels depicting scenes from the life of a Princess, the ceiling of the chapel is designed in the Baroque style. The design of the tomb was working the Royal architect Manuel Antunes.

Princess Giovanni took monastic vows in g. and lived in this monastery until his death in 1489. She was renowned for her virtue, and, according to legend, it was related to some miracles. In 1673 she was canonized as a Saint Giovanni.

The Museum houses a rich collection of paintings, sculptures, tiles, furniture, ceramic products of the Baroque era.
