Azov fortress and the Alekseevsky gates – the main attractions of the city of Azov, located on Genoa street, near the old fish factory. First the most thorough study of this monument took place during the excavation in 1935
The ramparts of the fortress were built in the XVI – XVII century by the Turks and rebuilt in the XVIII century by the Russians. The author of the project was a military engineer Laval.
The fortress that was first captured by the Cossacks and then the archers of Peter the great, was destroyed in the middle of the XVIII century the Only defensive building that remains from the fortress, became the Alekseevsky gates.
Just on the shafts there were eleven gates, of which in good condition are preserved only Alekseevsky, built of stone and brick. At the time of excavations gates had two parallel stone walls (piers), located at the end of the earthworks. Their length reached 13 m. the Distance between the stone walls was more than 3 m. the Walls Alexeyev gates were covered with hewn stone. They were originally built in wood species, but in 1801-1805 it was rebuilt in stone. Finally the gate was restored in the XX
Within Azov ancient ramparts. They stretch for several hundred meters. The height of the trees ranges from 4 to 15 m, width from 10 m to 30 m On Dzerzhinsky street today you can see the moat, built in the XVI century, Its length is 100 m and the depth is 12 m.
The ramparts and the Alekseevsky gates are interesting monuments of military engineering. From the ramparts is a beautiful view of the Delta of the don. This is one of the most visited places in Azov. Here I love to be like the locals and guests of the city.
