Annunciation Cathedral of the city of Birobidzhan is the first stone Church in the entire history of this region.

In April 1990 on the territory of the Jewish Autonomous region thanks to the efforts of local residents in Birobidzhan the parish was organized in honor of the Apostle James the Lord's brother. For the services allocated to the parish old wooden building on Kirov street, which previously housed the people's court. Soon, however, the wooden building is so dilapidated that it was dangerous to the lives of parishioners. In the result, it was decided to demolish the old wooden building, and in its place build a new stone Cathedral of the Annunciation of the blessed virgin.

Construction work began in April 2003 In July of the same year, when I finished the zero cycle, under the base of the Eastern wall of the temple were laid part of the tomb of Grand Duchess Elizabeth Feodorovna, the Holy relics of Prince Theodore and his children of Constantine and David, Yaroslavl miracle workers. In September 2004, the Cathedral Chapter was crowned with crosses, and then a Liturgy was served.

In the lower part of the temple was used as a Church dedicated to St. James the Apostle and the baptistery, which was consecrated by Bishop Joseph in August 2005, the high altar, named in honour of the Annunciation of the blessed virgin Mary, was consecrated in September 2005, In the Annunciation Cathedral with a procession had moved the main Shrine of the diocese - the relics of St. innocent, Metropolitan of Moscow, and the revered list of the Iveron icon of the Mother of God that was written on mount Athos.

By the end of 2005, completed the construction of utility buildings. In the spring of 2005 at the Cathedral began to build a two-storey building of the Socio-educational centre of Birobidzhan diocese. Construction work ended in September 2006, after which the building was solemnly consecrated.
