Spilberk castle was founded in the second half of the XIII century. It was originally a Gothic castle of Czech kings, then the seat of the Moravian margraves, and starting with the half of the XVII century, the castle was gradually transformed into a mighty fortress in the Baroque style. In the system of fortifications of the fortress also included casemates, the construction of which was completed in 1742.

In 1783, under the reforms of the places of imprisonment in the Austrian monarchy, Emperor Joseph II decided to throw in silbersky fortress prison for the most violent and dangerous criminals. A year later, it was implemented the following Imperial decree: to prosecute criminals, sentenced to life imprisonment, in the deepest and darkest dungeons. For this purpose were built 30 cameras, downed out of thick wooden planks and beams, to which the prisoners were kept chained. Although in such circumstances, the inmates were only five years old, spilarctia casemates in their purpose and nature was the most feared prison of the Austrian monarchy. She acted until 1855. So sad Spilberk castle became famous as the "prison of peoples".
