Beautiful island green part of the Great Barrier reef, one of the seven natural wonders of the world. This ancient coral island – it is more than 6 thousand years – is 45 minutes away by catamaran from Cairns. And yet it is the only coral island of the Great Barrier reef, covered with rain forest. The local aborigines of the tribe of Honganji (Gungandji) called the island "Davoucci," which in their language meant "the place of the hole in the nose." They were catching fish here and used the island green for holding sacred initiation ceremonies for young men. Living here was denied because the island was considered to be inhabited by spirits.
In 1770, past the island floated the famous British Explorer, captain James cook, who named the island in honor of Charles green, the chief naval astronomer. Almost a hundred years later – in 1857 began the colonization of the island by Europeans, there was established a farm on cultivation of sea cucumbers. In 1937, the island was declared a national Park, then began intensive development of tourism: in 1948 launched the first glass-bottom boat to get a better view of the amazing corals, in 1954 opened the first underwater Observatory. Later the glass bottom boat were improved, and today enjoy the coral thickets on a unique "semi-submersible" boat, which works on the principle of a submarine. In 1970 the island was visited by Queen Elizabeth II.
