Wat Lok molee is one of the oldest Buddhist temples of Chiang Mai. The exact date of its construction is not known, the first records appear in 1367.
The history of the Church reads: the sixth king of Mengrai dynasty named Kate, or Phra Kaew Muang, was invited to the city of ten monks from Burma. Their goal was the development of Buddhism school of Theravada in the North of Thailand. Invited monks and founded Wat Lok Moli.
The Church in its time had a Royal value. The ruling family Mengrai took him under his protection, and responsibility. After their death, the remains of several members of the dynasty were buried in Vatu Lok Moli as a sign of acknowledgement and respect.
In 1527 by order of king Phra Kaew Muang at the temple was constructed of beautiful Chedi (stupa). In the course of centuries it has experienced a restoration, so to this day preserved in excellent condition. On each side are niches with statues of the Buddha. The four corners at the base of the Chedi, the rest of the Enlightened guarded by mythical beasts. In this Chedi houses the ashes of the family Mengrai, who founded the Lanna Kingdom (the territory of today's Northern Thailand).
Viharn (the Central room) Wat Lok Moli entirely made of wood, decorated with amazing carving and gilding, and is a beautiful example of architecture in the Lanna style.
At the temple there is a teak pavilion, where various articles of this valuable and beautiful wood. The Central place is occupied by the figure of the Queen Kirepapa, who ruled the Lanna with 1545 in 1546.
The entrance of Wat Lok Moli through a traditional gate with elegant moldings guarded by two demon defender, statues of which are truly a work of art.
