Church of the ascension in Gelendzhik is the oldest building of the city, it is over 100 years old. The Church was built in 1905-1909, in Russian-Byzantine style.

In 1904 Gelendzhik on the village meeting, it was decided to erect on the site of the old wooden bell tower is a new stone Church building. In 1905, after approval of the project and estimates have determined the contractor Grechkin local farmer and owner of a construction firm. The author of the project of the stone Church was made by architect Vasiliev. The interior of the Church was painted by artist Carotin. By the spring of 1909 the building of the Church of the ascension was completed. In may 1909 he was consecrated Bishop of Sukhumi Dmitry.

After the revolution the Holy ascension Church a few times then closed, then re-opened. In 1952, the Church building was nationalized. In 1964, 1976 and 1982 city Executive Committee took decisions on the restoration and use of the temple for cultural and educational purposes. In 1984 the Church was transferred to the local history Museum, after which it began to be restored. Today the Church of the ascension is an amazing beauty five-domed Church with a Central dome, made in the form of an elongated cross, and three-tiered bell tower, located above the Western porch. The walls of the Church are of considerable strength and thickness, they were lined with old brick and rough stone.
