Cathedral of the Theotokos of the Sign in Kemerovo – the monument, Orthodox Church, whose history began in 1947. That year was first registered Znamenskaya Church in Kemerovo assigned to the ROC community. Small wooden Church building was located in the Central part of the city, which is now Central Park near the Central district administration.
Twelve years later, namely in December 1960, the Church had a sad fate of most of the religious buildings in the territory of the Soviet Union. During the next stage of the struggle against religion, the community, the ROC has been withdrawn from registration, and the Znamenskaya Church building demolished for the subsequent building of the town center. Since then, parishioners have the opportunity to visit only one surviving Church on the right Bank of the Tom river – Nicholas Church.
Historical events of the 1980s, allowed believers to talk about the opening of the temple. Then the parishioners were sent letters to the authorities requested the blessing of the ruling Metropolitan Gideon. In March 1989 a meeting of the city Council of people's deputies, during which it was decided to allocate a plot area of 1, 5 ha vacant site of the former flea market Church under construction.
The first Liturgy was held in the same year, in the building adjacent to the construction site. In the winter of 1989 at the time of the patronal feast in honor of the Novgorod icon of the Mother of God "the Sign" was conducted the consecration and the laying of the first stone. The project was initiated by the architects M. Sokolov and G. Nekrashevich. Internal painting of the Church was carried out by a talented group of artists headed by the graduate of the Stroganov art school - Rabotnov S. A.
In 1992 at the belfry mounted bells, custom at the Ural factory. When the Church began to operate a Sunday school, taken care of a nursing home in South. Since the first days of functioning of the sign of the advent, when the Church was organized charitable refectory, which now serves about a hundred people a day – children from large and poor families, the elderly, the disabled and low-income. At this moment, a close cooperation with the Center for families and children.
